This week, IE members Leonardo Lezcano and Miguel Angel Sicilia attended the 24th edition of the International Conference on Advanced Information Systems Engineering (CAiSE’12), that took place in Gdańsk, Poland. In the last years, the IE group has been the organizer of the ONTOSE workshop in the CAiSE conference. The workshop is centred in the role of abstraction in man-made systems (as complex Information Systems), social systems (as organizations, social networks or service systems) or natural systems (as environmental or ecological systems) and on how these abstractions are useful for practical purposes in advanced Information Systems.
As part of the workshop, Leonardo presented a research work titled “Modeling the context of scientific information: mapping VIVO and CERIF“. It was a pleasure to meet once again our colleagues Fabio Sartori and Pythagoras Karampiperis, who also presented their current works.

On June 21st, a technical meeting took place at AgroKnow headquarters in Athens. The agINFRA greek partner team recieved their colleagues from IPB, SZTAKI, INFN, ESPOL… and of course IE member Jaakko Lappalainen. The day started with a very warm welcome (along with the hot Athens’ weather) by AgroKnow memebers Nikos Manouselis, Laura Gravilut, Giannis Stoitsis and other 2 or 3 Nikos-s

The point of the meeting was to plan the development and deploy of a nice agINFRA prototype to show at the review in October.

AgroKnow workers are very lucky. A very nice place with terrace surrounded by trees. An agricultural environment for an agricultural company.

Everything is clear now. Everybody knows what to do. Good luck, agINFRA partners!

Two weeks ago, IE members Jaakko Lappalainen, Leonardo Lezcano and Miguel Angel Sicilia crossed the ocean and arrived at the Eppley Airfield in Omaha, Nebraska to attend the twelfth edition of the International Conference on Computational Science (ICCS’12). The IE group has been the organizer for three years of the KREAM workshop in the ICCS conference. The Knowledge REpresentation and Applied Models and Metadata in computational science (KREAM) workshop aims at gathering high quality research results about the use of knowledge representations, schemas and models in computational science for concrete applications, the design of e-science infrastructure support or papers dealing with the analysis, development or evaluation of the representations themselves.
As part of the workshop, Jaakko presented a research work titled “Modeling the Semantics of Contextual and Content-specific Research Metadata using Ontology Languages: issues on combining CERIF and OWL” and Leonardo did the same with “Contrasting Knowledge Organization Systems for the description of research products: the case of overlapping in the agricultural domain”
It was a pleasure to meet once again our colleague Nikos Korfiatis, who gave a presentation titled “Computational Science in Perspective: How can we assess a conference based on individual participation”
Also, it was a magnific oportunity for the IE group to visit the operational headquarters of Gallup, Inc.

Last week several IE members visited Alicante for the annual Conference on Learning Objects SPDECE. This year’s edition took place in the University of Alicante and the group presented not only a good number of papers but also a keynote on our current EU projects and carried out several dissemination activities for projects Open Discovery Space and Organic.Lingua.
As usual, we met old friends and collaborators such as Juliá Minguillón from UOC, Manuel Prieto from University of Castilla la Mancha, Manuel Marco and Pedro Pernías from University of Alicante and Juan Ramón Pérez from University of Oviedo, among many others.
